HERITAGE

The Waterman’s Arms is situated 2 miles from the Elizabethan market town of Totnes and 7 miles from the historic naval town of Dartmouth, near the famous riverside villages of Tuckenhay and Dittisham, it provides a central base to explore South Devon.

This part of the county is famous for its countryside and coastline with a world heritage site; areas of outstanding natural beauty; Dartmoor National Park (with its famous tors, ponies and waterfalls) and over 100 miles of amazing coastlines.

No wonder that walking is a popular pastime.

Stock Beaches

BEACHES

Beaches are 6 miles away.  

Particular to note are Blackpool Sands and  Slapton Sands.  A bit further afield are Broadsands, Goodridge beach (with its water park) and Hope Cove.  

If you enjoy walking why not try part of the Coastal Path with its dramatic views passing through coastal villages heading towards the Start Point lighthouse..

Family

FAMILY

Apart from paddling in the river on a hot summers day, there are various attractions for the family to enjoy, notable are Woodlands Family Theme Park; Dart harbour for crabbing; Pennywell Farm; Dart river boat trips and stream railways at Kingswear and Buckfastleigh.  

For rainy days why not visit the Butterfly Farm and Otter sanctuary or China Blue in Totnes where you can paint your own ceramics?  Kents Cavern in Torquay and Paington Zoo are well worth a trip.

GOLF COURSES

There are local 3 golf courses, Dartmouth Golf Club and Spa (including a championship course) and Dainton Park near Newton Abbott

FOR WATER LOVERS

Many events and activities are available for water lovers including kayaking, paddle boarding, boat hire and the famous Dartmouth Regatta in August.  

If ’stronger’ water is your tipple, there are wine tours at Sandridge Barton home of Sharpham wine and gin tours at Salcombe Distillery.  

Totnes Brewing Company have a wide selection of their own craft ales, guest craft ales and ciders to try.

CASTLES AND COUNTRY HOUSES

Local Castles and Country Houses are great for a visit, these include Berry Pomeroy (home to the Tudor Howard family); Totnes and Dartmouth castles.

Greenway, which was the home of Agatha Christie, is just the other side of the river Dart, why not get a passenger ferry from Dittisham to enjoy both river and countryside views? Other country houses of Coleton Fishacre, Overbecks and Ugbrooke are not too far away. Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth, whilst closed to the public, does run tours on set days in the year.

This officer training academy was where Queen Elizabeth met her future husband Prince Philip and many royals have trained.
